Nintendo Presser E3 2014 Notes

Notes from the Nintendo digital presser!

  • Super Smash Brothers U – Trailer.. thing? ‘Mii fighter’ announced. 3 types, Brawlers (fists), Swordfighters, and Gunner (Arm Cannons/Projectiles). Looks like a lot of the extra minigames and random customization is coming back, along with some new stuff. Oct 3 for 3DS version. Holiday 2014 for Wii U version.
  • Amiibo – Skylander type toys with special chips in them that will cause Wii U systems to recognize figures. ‘Spring to life’ in compatible games. Super Smash Bros Wii U will be the first game to support it. Support for Mario Kart 8 being worked on.
  • Yoshi’s Wooly World – Looks pretty cute, just like Kirby’s Epic Yarn.
  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker – Super Mario 3D world inspired platformer.
  • Legend of Zelda Wii U – The one screen they showed looked pretty. A lot of moving foilage and stuff. Described as Open World. Cell Shaded cinematic trailer. Still want to see more, but looks like a decent start.
  • Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remake – Still a thing. Some weird live action/gameplay hybrid trailer.
  • Bayonetta 2 – Still a thing. Gameplay trailer. Get original with purchase of the sequel.
  • Hyrule Warriors – Dev commentary video. Sept 26 date.
  • Kirby and the Rainbow Cruise – 2015 claymation Kirby game.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X (AKA just X) – Cinematic trailer. HNNNNG
  • Mario Maker – Gameplay Trailer. Create your own Mario worlds. Uses Original Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros U 2D engines it looks like
  • Splatoon – 8 player 4v4 online multiplayer action game. Paintball 3rd person shooter. Use paint to ‘claim’ territory.
  • Final Announcement is Palunteena as a SSBU character.

Sooooooooooooo. Where should I start with this. Of all the stuff they talked about I really only care about Super Smash Brothers U and X really. The little bit of the Wii U Legend of Zelda title seemed interesting and a lot more ‘next gen,’ but I’m not really going to be on board until I see more. I’m not just going to get hype over a mention of a Legend of Zelda game. They showed a lot of platforms that don’t really do anything for me, I am not even close to the target audience for the Amiibo thing, Hyrule Warriors looks neat I guess, and Splatoon was actually kinda cool. Pokemon has basically become Nintendo’s Call of Duty. Seems like a real cash cow franchise they just throw version of out now.

It is probably worth noting that Mario Party 10, and a new Star Fox is available to demo at E3. Mario Party 10 could be fun if they have solid online play. Devil’s Third, a new title from the Ninja Gaiden director, was also announced after the presser as a Wii U exclusive. I found the fact that they didn’t release all of this info during the presser a little weird.

I’ll have a bigger post about the entirety of E3 later this week. I used up most of my lunch break at work for this one :).

Right now as far as pressers go I’m thinking Ubisoft > Microsoft > Sony > Nintendo > EA.

Microsoft Presser E3 2014 Notes

Here is my whole breakdown of the Microsoft Presser. A lot of these will be quick and to the point. I’ll have my thoughts on the whole show at the end.

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will have all DLC release on Xbone first. Nothing shocking here. They also showed a Live Demo. Looks like a graphical improvement maybe (Hard to tell with Pressers like this).
  • Forza 5 owners can get a free Race Track called Burgring (or something like that) right now.
  • Forza Horizon 2 announcement – 1080P, Dynamic weather, Dedicated Servers, ‘Seamless Multiplayer’ (Not really sure what they mean. Jump in jump out races sounds dumb?)
  • Evolve – Beta is Exclusive to Xbone. The trailer was really badass, make sure you check that out.
  • Assassin’s Creed: Unity – “World Primere” since they can’t say announcement lol. 4 Person Co-op was demoed, which looked pretty cool. Seems to be in Paris, possibly French revolution era?
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition – Exclusive Xbone DLC. Really pretty Cinematic Trailer.
  • Sunset Overdrive – Trolled the entire audience. Their opening cinematic trailer started off looking like a generic shooter bro in a warehouse fighting some random terrorist looking guys and suddenly the Sunset Overdrive guy burst in murdered all of them and made a snarky remark to shooter bro.  Seriously go check out this trailer. They also had a gameplay demo. #HYPETRAIN
  • Dead Rising 3 Exclusive Xbone DLC for Capcom anniversary. Seemed funny but I don’t really care.
  • Disney Fantasia Music Evolved – Announced. Explore some Disney music or some shit.
  • Dance Central Spotlight – Announced. Digital Download DC game.
  • Fable Legends – 3 or 4 (hard to tell) player Co-op Fable game. Players can also play the villain character, which sees the map in a top down RTS style and plays the game like a tower defense game AGAINST the ‘good’ players. Really cool concept. Xbone Beta in Fall.
  • Project Spark – We already knew about this. Random Cinematic trailer. CONKER SHOWED UP AT THE END THO.
  • Ori and the Blind Forest – Looked pretty cute and colorful. And Indie-esque 2D side scrolling adventure game by the looks of it. Possibly has a dark/depressing story. Scripted Trailer (Kinda Cinematic I guess? 2D game).
  • Halo The Master Chief Collection – CALLED IT. Collection of Halo 1, 2, 3, and 4. Halo 2’s graphics have been remastered for the released. Each Multiplayer will run it it’s own original engine, INCLUDING Halo 2. Over 100 Multiplayer Maps and ‘tons of customization.’ 4000 Gamerscore (CHEEVOZ)
  • Halo 5: Guardians – Beta in December (Access included in Halo Collection).
  • Inside – Announced. Limbo Esque 2D sidescroller from the PlayDead guys. Looks pretty dark and dreary as well. Main character is a child.
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider – Announced with Cinematic Trailer.
  • Witcher 3 – Gameplay Demo. Still Looks Awesome.
  • Phantom Dust – Reboot/Remake/Sequel/KITreatment announced with Cinematic Trailer.
  • The Division – Gameplay Demo. Still looks awesome. Some Xbone exclusive DLC crap.
  • Scalebound – Announced. RPG. GIANT MONSTERS. Swords/Arrows/Etc. Seems kind of cool, only a cinematic trailer though. Platinum Games Xbone Exclusive.
  • Crackdown – (Not numbered 3?) Announced. Cinematic Trailer. Possibly more than 2 player Co-op?
  • All of these Indie Games were briefly shown in a montage: Aztec Assassins, Knight Squad, Plague Inc, White Night, Earthlock Festival of Magic, Cuphead, Hyper Light Drifter, Lifeless Planet, Slash Dash, FRU, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Mighty No 9, Grave, THREES, FenixRage, Woolfe , IDARB, Hellraid, Below (This is a copy and paste from my notes, there might be some spelling errors).

Overall this was actually a really solid presentation from Microsoft. Kinect was only mentioned once by the Dance Central guy. They really were just pushing games, games, and more games. This is probably Microsoft’s best showing in a couple of years. I was a little surprised at no mention of the price drop of the Xbone and nothing about Gears though. Still there was plenty of really interesting stuff in there. I think my game of their show would be Sunset Overdrive. Scalebound sounds really interesting, but I’ll want to see more about it before I get hype. Fable Legends also sounds really cool, I like that concept a lot. Other than that, there was a lot of stuff I already knew about, other stuff I thought there was cool, and only a tiny bit of shit I don’t really care about (See Dancing Games). That list of Indie games was also really impressive. Mighty No. 9 and Below probably being the ones worth mentioning the most. Cuphead made me lol (Character literally has a Cup for his head). I wish they let us seem more than like a 5 second clip of these in their montage.

That is it for the Microsoft Presser. Next one up is EA. I’ll make a similar post for it. I’ll also probably do a wrap up post sometime after all the presentations this week and I’ll make a point of including any of the trailers I thought were really great (Like the Sunset Overdrive one).

April and May Update! Final Fantasy, WoW, Streaming Stuff, review backlog, and more!

Hello friends!

I’ve got a good bit of updates to make for this post.  A couple of mini reviews, Final Fantasy progress, some changes to the stream schedule  including future FF marathon plans, and info on a new endeavor I’ve started. So this might be a bit of a long one. We’ll see where I end up 🙂

Reviews first: Titanfall and South Park: Stick of Truth. Going with my traditional single paragraph reviews.

My first impression of Titanfall was that it is a breath of fresh air in the competitive FPS genre. The first week it was out I played it a ton. The second week I played it less. After the third week I basically stopped playing. The game is great and really fun, but after three weeks I had gotten my fun with it. I couldn’t quite put my finger on why. There is definitely a bit  a lack in variety in the game types and available weapons, but I don’t quite think that is it. Ultimately, I decided it is because after the novelty of the mechs wears off it is just another military shooter. It doesn’t really have anything going for it past that. So I really enjoyed what I played but eventually I just got bored. If you’re looking for a military shooter you can’t do much better than Titanfall. If you’re looking for a lasting multiplayer experience you may want to look elsewhere.

So when I first heard that South Park: Stick of Truth was going to be a thing I assumed it was going to be a dumb game with a lot of annoying TV show references. Then I heard it was going to have JRPG style gameplay. I was a little more on board after that. Then I watched some trailers and became really excited. To put it shortly, South Park: Stick of Truth is basically everything you’d imagine playing through an episode of South Park would be like. The game has a unique narrative and doesn’t steal from any of the existing shows. It plays very well. They don’t force the references, but there are a ton of them and they flow in naturally. There was a boatload of side quests as well, all of which were very entertaining. Overall if you like JRPGs and/or South Park you will enjoy this game. Definitely worth it.

So next up is Final Fantasy progress. This runs into my plans for streaming a bit, but we’ll focus on how the FF marathon is going here. So we’ve beaten FF1 – 5 and we’re about halfway through FF6. I haven’t really made any progress in a few weeks though for various reasons. Burn out contributing a little as well. As a result I plan on changing up some of my streaming schedule to be a bit more flexible. So let’s get into that.

I still plan on streaming at least 4 nights a week. I’m just not going to designate a specific game for any of my schedule. So instead of saying I’ll be playing FF6 on whatever day, I’ll just say I’m streaming that day. So to make it simple: my set in stone stream times are Tuesday – Friday from 6PM CST to at least 10PM CST. Sat – Mon will be extra streams with unspecified times, but I’ll post on Twitter and Facebook about them. Monday would also be 6 – 10 if that occurs. Additionally, at least one night a week I’ll be streaming a Final Fantasy game and continuing the FF marathon project. My goal is to complete one a month.

The only other major thing I’ve got going on is my recent return to World of Warcraft as my main MMO. I have decided against playing anymore Wildstar. Long story short I wasn’t a big fan of the gameplay. So instead I’ve decided to take another serious crack at WoW. I’ve made a guild with a couple of old friends, with the intention of creating a hardcore 10 man raid team to clear all the current high-end content and then move into the next expansion. This has been taking up a lot of my gaming time (as MMOs tend to do) as I attempt to get my old Shadow Priest back into a raid ready state. I’ve already streamed some Raid Finder stuff, and I intend to continue to stream raids for my guild. This sort of progress is very slow though if you want to do it right, so once I get to a point where I don’t need to do a ton of stuff for my character I’ll probably play less until the guild is raid ready. I’m pretty excited about this though, mostly because I miss raiding and playing a Shadow Priest. Shadow Priest has easily been one of the most fun characters I’ve played in an MMO.

In other random gaming news:

  • I now have a Wii and a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles. I’ll try to stream that once I start it.
  • I’ve bought a Vita, Persona 4 Golden, and DanganRonpa. I don’t have the capabilities to stream games from my 3DS/PSVita right now unfortunately. So I’ll have to play those during stream downtimes, which is fine :). You can expect some blog reviews about handheld games that I finish. I still need to finish Bravely Default too.
  • I’ve already secured copies of Wolfenstein: The New Order, Transistor, and Watch_Dogs. I’ll probably stream Wolfenstein a lot next week until I beat it. Transistor I want to take my time with, so I’ll probably play it AFTER I play through Watch_Dogs on stream.
  • I plan to do something for E3. I haven’t really decided what yet. I’ll take better notes this year though and actually make a post.
  • I’ve started playing League again a little bit. Probably won’t get into it as much as I was previously. Mostly just wanna play with friends.

So with all of that, here are things you can expect from me now (kind of a TL;DR).

  • Streaming at least 4 days a week starting this coming Tuesday.
  • Continuation of the Final Fantasy Marathon, but taking it slower so I don’t burn out. Finishing FF6 in May.
  • More WoW/MMO talk on stream and in the blog.
  • Simple Paragraph Reviews for (at least): Wolfenstein: The New Order, Transistor, and Watch_Dogs. Hopefully Bravely Default or Persona 4 Golden too.
  • E3 Post and a ‘Games I’m looking forward to’ post.

That is about it for now. I’ve got a few posts I want to make that aren’t update posts too. I might do one of those soon, we’ll see. Most of them are focused on MMOs, but I’ve also got some stuff in mind for Nintendo, FPS genre, and more! Thanks for reading, and check out my stream this week 🙂
